Derek Monypeny + Kevin Corcoran, Wilson Shook
Born in the Arizona desert, a veteran of multiple explorations into the Sahara Desert via Morocco and Western Sahara, and now a resident of the Mojave, guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Derek Monypeny sees his musical mission as adding to and expanding on what he calls the "desert continuum"; the psychedelic sirocco swirl of desert-based stringed instruments played with utter abandon by musicians the world over. Derek is a former member of the bands Oaxacan (Oakland, CA), ALTO! (Portland, OR), and Sir Richard Bishop's Freak Of Araby Ensemble. He has performed and toured with artists such as Bill Orcutt, Mike Watt, Jozef van Wissem, Lau Nau, Arrington de Dionyso, and many others.
Kevin Corcoran is a drummer and percussionist based in San Francisco. Whether working in sparse sound with a single drum and cymbal, or frenetic contexts on the drum kit, improvisation is crucial to his practice as generative method and non-hierarchical exchange of ideas. Kevin is originally from Sacramento, California where he played in Antennas Erupt!, Dead Western, and Invasive Species among other projects emerging from the vibrant DIY scene there in the early 2000s. He balances ad hoc improvisations with deepening sound practices through long-term commitments (such as his duo with Derek Monypeny touring in 2025) as he collaborates across disciplines and borders with musicians, dancers, writers, and media artists in the US, Mexico, Europe, and East Asia.
Wilson Shook is an improvising saxophonist and manual therapist living in Oakland, CA since 2022. His approach to music has been shaped by collaborative relationships with Gust Burns, Paul Hoskin, Ben Bennett, Greg Kelley, Carol Genetti, Ted Byrnes, and others, as well as an ongoing sonic exploration of the resonant void spaces of American hydrologic and transportation infrastructure. For 10 years Wilson helped to organize the performance space Gallery 1412 in Seattle, and worked closely with the Seattle Improvised Music Festival.
